Op Art Line Drawings

The patterns of line drawings i did influenced me to try drawing with lines on illustrator. I can get a crisper line and a greater contrast between black and white. Again each line drawing influenced the next line drawing showing progression of my pattern making. I noticed that some of these drawings showed signs of Optical illusions, much like Op Art. I looked at Op Art and Bridget Riley's work as found a similar style. Some Op Art uses only black and white as the contrast between the two colours is greater than any other, allowing the illusion to be visually stronger. I found out that my Op drawings are similar to periodic structure Op Art. Periodic structures are defined by a function that repeats the same values at regular intervals, as the variable increase and decrease uniformly.

Line Patterns

After drawing from the building I wanted to make my own drawings of line and looking at the patterns that can be made with multiple lines. Each drawing inspired the next drawing. I'm interested to see what these might look like or inspire on a computer with a crisper line. I think some of these drawings can show a different type of image when looked at and concentrated on differently.

Initial Drawing of Architecture

For this new project I have started by looking at architecture again. I've found images online of architecture that I liked showing repetition of line in the structure of the buildings/architecture. I have drew from these images showing the repeating lines and form. These drawings are the starting point of my process and by exploring these through drawing I can imagine different patterns that can be found.

Repetition of Lines in Architecture

The last couple of weeks I have been working in my sketchbook. I have collected images of architecture and building details that I can see hidden line of repetition. I have used these picture to draw over to pick out the patterns of the line formations. This indicates the beginning of my ideas and where my interests originate.

Initial Drawing

This week I've been working on my sketchbook and starting to do some initial drawings expressing my ideas of quilting and segments I found in the samurai armor and natural life in the garden.

Movement In An Area Drawings

Relating back to marking routes on maps I've taken it to a more 3d style of drawing. I've drawn an area and marked in colour the movement of people in the streets.

Translating My Walking Drawings

Continuing with my walking drawings I wanted to develop them further. I've tried different ways in which I can translate my images that are monoprinting and drawing using a sewing machine.

This worked pretty well and I tried it over different backgrounds, like on screen printed pieces, repetitive lyno prints and other map backgrounds.

Concentrating closely to the walking drawings I used a sewing machine to copy the scribbly lines. I really liked using a sewing machine to draw.

Recording My Journey

While I visiting Oxford and London I did a lot of travelling around to do my walking drawing, I took this oppertunity to record where I walked around the cities.

This is the start of the next step in my work as I'll branch off to journeys and how I can present them.

Walking Drawing: Mary Clare Foa

I've came across Mary Clare Foa who does alot of movement drawing, where she'd draw while walking and a series of rapidly drawn views from trains that she’d record hastily in a few lines. I found this to link very well to my project, and something i could begin to experimnt with.

When I started this off I began by stoping and drawing sepreate pictures on a route.

Then I tried walking and drawing at the same time when I was visiting Oxford and London.

I then tried drawing on buses, where I started by drawing seperate pictures of each stop.

Then each stop on one page.

After that I drew everything on one page.

And finally I started drawing everything on one page and switching to a new page before the first page got too full of lines and scribble.

Lesley Halliwell

I watched 'James May: My Sisters' Top Toys' on BBC2, where he looked at all the toys from his childhood found in his sisters toybox. One of which was the spirograph where he found it it hard to use without mistake but also mentioning the work of Lesley Halliwell who uses spirographs to create large colourful pieses with the small spirograph patterns. I thought this was an interesting way to use somthing as redundant as a childs toy to make the dynamic monochromatic ink drawings.

Cut Out Maps Shadows

Having my cut out maps layered together i saw that it created shadows between the cut out roads. I looked at small sections and drew only the shadows to create the image of the layered roads.

Taking inspiration from Tord laser cut pieces I've looked at making more shadows with my cut out maps by shining bright light onto maps giving a off a shadow pattern of the roads.
